Aftermath - An Arnold Schwarzenegger Drama Movie Inspired by True Events

A film that had Arnold Schwarzenegger playing usually quite interest me. He was one of my favorite action star in the 1980s and 1990s but since he became the governor of California, there were very few of his films. And unfortunately it was no longer action movies. The premise of the movie was drama, so I was not sure whether to watch it or not. But since it was the only film premiering yesterday and after I asked my wife to see if she was interested, she was quite convinced that the movie would be to her liking. And so we went to the cinema nearest our home in Setiabudi and saw it at 7.15 PM. Well here goes the movie.

Brief Story Line

Roman Melnyk (Arnold Schwarzenegger - Terminator series, Commando, True Lies and many more) was a construction worker who was looking forward to meet his wife and daughter to come home from their trip. He left work early so he could pick them up in the airport.

However, to his very much surprise, Roman was informed that the plane was delayed. He was asked to meet with a representative from the airport named Eve Sanders (Mariana Klaveno - True Blood TV series). He was shocked to find out that the plane that his wife and daughter were in was involved in an accident and there was likely no survivor. Roman was obviously crushed and ultimately he would become very depressed and stressed.

Meanwhile an air traffic control staff named Jacob Bonanos (Scoot McNairy - Sleepless, 12 Years a Slave etc) was getting ready to work night shift. He was married to Christina (Maggie Grace - Taken trilogy, Lost TV series etc) and had one son. It was shown later that the plane accident happened during his time of work that night. Jacob was feeling very guilty due to the accident and was not allowed to work by his boss. He would be having problem with his family as well and lots of people also blamed him for the accident.

During his lowest time, Roman met with a journalist named Tessa (Hannah Ware - Hitman: Agent 47) who was trying to prepare a complete story of the accident. After some time, Roman seemed to be able to cope with the situation. But he was still looking for closure and he wanted apology from people whom he believed was responsible for the accident, whether it's from the airline or even from Jacob.

So could Roman get what he wanted? Could he meet with Jacob? How would Jacob cope with the accident which left him with so much guilt? Find them all in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well, as you would expected, this was a real drama movie. Though the movie was categorized as drama thriller, I do not believe it has any thrill, or there was any mystery at all. The point of the story was how Roman and Jacob cope up with the same incident that changed their lives forever. For me though, my problem is that the movie was supposed to be having lots of emotions, but I was unable to feel emotional after watching it. Even the supposed very sad moment involving Roman in the beginning. I am not sure why. But then again, I know my wife was quite emotional watching those scenes.

Now what confused me was the fact the movie was having the budget of > USD 10 million, which for a drama movie was kind of expensive (if I compare to other low budget movies). There was no special effects required in this movie. The movie was also produced in 2016 but only premiered in Indonesia in 2017. So it was rather late for us to see this film.

By the way, this movie was inspired by true events. The character of Roman was based on a Russian person named Vitaly Kaloyev who had a similar incident of having his wife and 2 children in a plane that was involved in the accident. While the character Jacob was based on Peter Nielsen, a Swiss air traffic controller. The accident was called Überlingen mid-air collision back in the year 2002. The story was changed a bit but the main idea was the same.

So if you are looking for a drama inspired by true events then you can try and watch this one. But if you are looking for an action movie or tensed drama thriller movie, it would be best if you opt to see other movies. Please be informed that the movie is only playing in cinema 21. If you are interested to see this film, you need to do it fast as most likely the movie would be difficult to find next week with the premiering of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2.

Happy watching!
