Monster Trucks - A Story of Weird And Lovable Monster in A Truck

After playing in Indonesian theaters for quite some time, I finally got the chance to see this movie with my wife. We did try to see it on the 3rd day of playing (on Sunday, 29 January) but when we got to the cinema 1 hour before the scheduled time, the theater was already half filled and no more nice seats available. And later on we never got the chance to see it until yesterday. Even then it was also rather last minute. I got lucky when trying to get compliment from Samsung for the ticket voucher of CGV Blitz last week and the final voucher validity happened to be on 7 February. Fortunately there was still the 9.10 PM schedule for the movie, otherwise we would be seeing other newer movies which would have longer playing time. Ok, let's get on to the movie.

Brief Story Line

During a drilling activity at a large oil reserve location, the workers found some huge amount of water underground which led to the assumption that there might be an ecosystem down there. The major oil company's leader Reece Tenneson (Rob Lowe - St. Elmo's Fire, The West Wing TV series etc) did not want to risk the location become preserved which would endanger the large investment his company had made. He convinced their lead scientist Dr. Jim Dowd  (Thomas Lennon - The Odd Couple TV series etc) to agree to his logic and to continue the drilling. When the drilling was forced, a high pressure occurred and resulted to some explosions at the location where some kind of monsters came out of the land. Reece tried to avoid any publication, so he enlisted the help from Burke (Holt McCallany - Jack Reacher: Never Go Back etc) to capture and get rid of these monsters. They managed to capture 2 but 1 escaped and hid in a damaged car that was going to be towed to a junk yard.

Tripp Coley (Lucas Till - X-Men: First Class trilogy, remake of MacGyver TV series etc) was a high school student who was bored with life in small town and living with his mother (Amy Ryan - Central Intelligence etc) and her step father, the town sheriff named Rick (Barry Pepper - The Lone Ranger, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials etc). Tripp also worked part time in the junk yard under his boss Mr. Weathers (Danny Glover - Lethal Weapon Film series etc) and was trying to build a truck of his own using the scrap materials he could find there.

When the damaged car was delivered to the junk yard, the monster revealed itself at night when Tripp was working on his truck. After unsuccessfully tried to capture it, Tripp found out that it was a very young monster who was very playful and felt attached to it. Burke and his team found out that the 3rd monster they were looking for might be in the junk yard. So they went and try to look for it. However, the monster was hiding in Tripp's truck and moved the car using its tentacles. Tripp had no choice but to drive the car, using the monster's speed of moving the wheels of the truck. Tripp drove away with Meredith (Jane Levy - Evil Dead, Don't Breathe etc) the high school student who had a huge crush on Tripp and came to the junk yard that night intending to give biology tutoring to Tripp.

Tripp and Meredith were able to escape from Burke's team but Meredith was very shocked to see the monster. However being a biology enthusiast, she believed it should be protected, so he told Tripp to hide the monster in her father's warehouse. That night Tripp decided to modify his truck to enable the monster stay hidden inside the truck but at the same time, it could make the truck move around just like normal car. Tripp also named the monster Creech.

Meanwhile, Dr. Dowd who was analyzing the other 2 monsters, found out some interesting facts about the monsters. Despite the fun he was enjoying, Creech seemed to be missing the other monsters and tried to find them by his own. Tripp and Meredith were very worried as Burke's team were still looking to capture Creech.

So could Tripp and Meredith find Creech and save him from being captured by Burke? Could they help Creech return to his rightful place? Find them all in this fun comedy adventure movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie was surprisingly entertaining. Looking at the trailer, it did not seem to be promising. But after you watch it, you cannot help but to feel attached to Creech. Although he really is a monster with many tentacles (and seemed a bit terrifying & not cute at first), but his playful mode and his "laughter" was very charming. The main attraction in this movie was definitely Creech. Lucas Till was also good portraying the bored high school student (although he did looked too matured) and his relationship with Creech also seemed genuine.

The special effects of making Creech was awesome. He truly seemed like a real life monster and the scenes of him in the water, or inside the car were also amazing. I am not sure about the sound system as the theater I saw was not having the best kind. I felt like I was watching a movie in a large Television, since the sound only seemed to be coming from the front speakers.

The movie was pure fun and entertaining, so I am confused why people could not enjoy the movie. Of course there would be some flaws here and there, but which movie doesn't? I honestly feel that it was either lacking the promotion or perhaps the positive publicity. It's rather a shame since it already spent a lot of money to produce the movie and it would seem that it was not a commercial success. Even in Indonesia, it would be a real challenge if you want to see the movie now after less than 2 weeks playing.

Anyway, my wife and I were entertained by the movie and I personally think that the movie is not the bad kind which you would be upset after seeing it. It even had some moral message as well about environment. So if you have not seen the movie yet, you can definitely give this one a try before it is truly gone from the theaters. But of course if you do not like to see a movie with weird but kind of cute monster moving car which maybe too illogical for you, then it's not recommended for you to see it. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
